Valentine’s Day Gift Wrapping

Happy Valentine’s Day Eve!  I know there’s not really such a day to mark but I truly love Valentine’s Day, dare I say… with all my heart! It’s always been a special day for me.  It’s my brother’s birthday so I grew up thinking it was extra special.  I met my first boyfriend in high school on Valentine’s Day.  I came into a class to deliver anonymous carnations that other students had bought to surprise their Valentine.  Remember those little… [Read More]

Carlo’s Bakery Cannolis and Lobster Tail Pastries

Hello!  Happy Sunday (or Monday)!  You knew I was taking a little time off here and there to celebrate my 30th wedding anniversary and to work on some projects, didn’t you? I have a couple of treats to share with you today.  Just a little something Buddy the Cake Boss and I made together.  Well, sort of. To clarify, I’m asked multiple times each week to sample products, review cookbooks and attend launch parties and junkets in LA for all… [Read More]

Calligraphy, Hand Lettering and Inspiration Boards at Sugar Paper Los Angeles

Hello!  Mid-September.  I cannot believe it.  Can you? I’ve been busy away from home for the past couple of weeks so I haven’t baked a darned thing!  It does make sticking to a diet easier though and I’m the kind of gal who needs a creative diversion. I want to share a fun thing I did for two days this past week.  I took a calligraphy and hand lettering class at the Sugar Paper studio in LA taught by Molly… [Read More]

A Formula To Help Set Priorities in Life

A very wise woman shared this with me yesterday as I was waffling some options in life: 365 days x 80 years (for the sake of longevity reference) = 29,200 Days available from birth 365 days x 56 (use your current age) = 20,440 Days used (gasp!) 29,200 (days available from birth) – 20,440 (days used) = 8760 Days remaining (hopefully healthy and productive) When it’s laid out in front of us in numbers sometimes it becomes clearer. Does it… [Read More]

The OC Fair and Competition Results

The results are in and mama took home some color! I also Instagramed the fair because I’m lovin’ being so portable. 1st Place – Single Crust with a fruit filling.  I made the best Dutch Apple Pie, at least my family thinks so and apparently the judges did too.  I’ll post the recipe this summer so you can make it too. I also made this funky little video.  My tasty treat will be twirling for a month’s stay in it’s… [Read More]

Marilyn’s Big West LA Adventure

On Monday, I was invited by the Lifetime channel to attend an event promoting their new series Supermarket Superstars, which will premier on July 22. My biggest thrill was meeting and speaking to Debbi (Mrs.) Fields.  See what she’s holding?  It’s one of my cookies! My appreciation for Debbi goes back 21 years ago when I bought her cookbook for 100 recipes for cookies.  It was the third cookbook I had ever bought.  Her recipe for glazed lemon pound cake… [Read More]

Summer Garden and Miscellany

This week is going to be busy as I deliver my baked goods to the Orange County Fair.  I may have been a tad ambitious when signing up as everything sounded doable while registering online at 1 AM, a month ago. You know how that goes. Our garden is bursting with goodness!  Sunday morning brought me outdoors to harvest our San Marzano and heirloom tomatoes, yellow boy tomatoes, purple and green basil, purple bell peppers and Eureka lemons.  We made… [Read More]

Baking Tip–Clogged Decorating Tip? It’s the Meringue Powder!

Yep.  You heard me right.  Thought it was undissolved powder sugar?  My investigation is that it’s your meringue powder and let me tell you why I think that. Meringue powder has changed in the last, uh, thirty years I’ve been using it to make royal icing.  For my recipe for royal icing, I’ve always used the hottest tap water I could muster and that always dissolved both the powdered sugar without sifting it and anything the meringue powder might have… [Read More]
